2005 Winners Announced
(Ohio) Fresh Writers Books, an imprint of Holy Macro Books, is proud to announce the
winners of the 2005 Contest. Bridget O’Dwyer, a junior at Shaker Heights High School, and
Paul Shivers, a junior at Salem High School , and Joe Shivers, a junior at Salem High School.
O’Dwyer is doing a modern retelling of a Mid Summer Nights Dream. “Bridget will contribute a
great deal to the writing program,” says Charles Kelly, and English Teacher at Shaker, “She is
a strong, creative thinker and writer.”
The Shivers are cousins and will be co-writing a story about a cross country team and their bid to
make it to the state championship. “This book is for everyone who has ever pushed themselves
for a higher goal, for anyone who has ever stood their ground against an oppressive authority,”
says Shivers.
These three high school students have accepted the challenges that come with wanting to be
a published author. They have weekly deadlines to meet and should have the manuscripts
completed by the time they go back to school in August. The books will be released in early
Spring of 2006.
The Fresh Writers Books contest was piloted in 2004 at Lake High School in Uniontown, Ohio.
Bill Jelen, a local author and publisher of books on Microsoft Excel, was volunteering as part
of Junior Achievement when he got the idea. “The 2004 contest gave four local students the
chance to roll up their sleeves and see fi rst hand what it’s like to be an author,” says Jelen.
“Based upon the great feedback we got from the students, their parents, and the community, I
decided to expand the program regionally.”
When they go back to school in the fall, O’Dwyer and the Shivers’ will have quite an answer for
the “So, what did you do over the summer?”
