Book Writing Contest Announced for High School Students
Summary:
Four high school students won book publishing contracts in 2004, and a new contest to find young authors has begun for 2005. One or more high school students will be selected to write a book and have it published.
Uniontown, OH, March 1, 2005: The dream of every writer – to publish a book. But for most that dream is elusive.
For one lucky high school student that dream will come true this year. One, and perhaps more, teenager will win a book publishing contract as part of the prize in a writing contest that many veteran writers would give their eyeteeth just to have a chance at.
It all began in the spring of 2004 when publisher Bill Jelen volunteered to teach a Jr. Achievement class at a local high school. He taught the students about the cold, hard facts of how difficult it is for writers to have their first book published.
The students complained about the obstacles they felt were unfair, which prompted Jelen to make an amazing offer – a writing contest with a book publishing contract as the prize. The entries were so good he awarded the prize to four aspiring young writers.
“I was planning to give just one contract, but four of the proposals were so good I decided to award them all a contract,” said Jelen.
The four winners now have published books which are just about ready for distribution and can be purchased at the major online bookstores and at www.FreshWritersBooks.com. The winning students and their parents said it was a dream come true.
Current U.S. high school students can enter the contest by submitting a book proposal. A detailed description of the entry requirements can be found at Jelen’s web site at www.FreshWritersBooks.com. The deadline for entries is March 31, 2005.
The winner, or winners, will receive a publishing contract and a $1,200 summer internship to write the book during the summer of 2005. Upon publication in 2006 each author will also receive royalties.
“There’s no better way to learn than to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Experience is, after all, the best teacher,” said Jelen, who is financing the entire project. “What a great summer job. Earn money doing something exciting that will kick-start your career. What could be better?”
Jelen is himself an author, and is currently offering free copies of his book, “Learn Excel from Mr Excel,” which is available one chapter per week at www.mrexcel.com/learn-excel.html.
