Smoke jumper Cole Hunter has it all: a loving relationship with his wife
Julie, a career he thrives on, a beautiful new daughter, and a fulfi lling
camaraderie with the members of his jumping team. His life is perfect
until a wildfi re in Arizona takes the life of his best friend and captain
and leaves Cole virtually deaf. This accident leads to the dissolution
of the love between himself and his wife. Cole is left searching for
ways to be the man his family needs and overcome his own doubts
and struggles while his wife feels abandoned and unwanted and has
a set of struggles all her own. When Cole goes away for a month of treatment for his
hearing loss, Julie falls into lust with a young man from church and commits adultery.
As Cole discovers his purpose and restores his heart to the Lord, Julie falls from grace
and forgets the love she came from. Ultimately the Lord restores all, and through a
devastating act of vandalism, the Hunters reunite under the name of the Lord, coming to
realize His truth that no sin is too big to forgive and no bridge is too broken to restore.
The story is moving and has modern-day principles that apply to everyone: the reality of
the Lord’s plan for each person, the realization that although bad things do happen to
good people, no situation is too big for the Lord; that He only gives us as much as we can
handle; that sometimes His strength is all we have to get us through the day; and that
love is the most lasting, forgiving human act of all. The study questions at the end of the
book plays a key role in helping the reader directly apply the truths of the story to the
reader’s own day-to-day life.
